Gordie: A Hockey Legend
Author: Roy MacSkimming
Pages: 220
Published: 2003
Publisher: Greystone Books
Genre: Biography
Reviewed By: Steven Scott
The Book I chose was called “GORDIE A HOCKEY LEGEND” this book is an unauthorized biography about Gordie Howe himself. This book takes you from when Gordie was a child all the way until he retired. The core of this book takes place when he when he played on the Red Wing’s “Production Line” and broke most of his records. (Gordie stayed with the Red Wings until retirement, but he came back to play for Hartford with his two nephews)
The story starts when Gordie is a young child he always liked hockey and he was raised in a family of nine. Gordie was known as a momma's boy although being in a family with eight other children Gordie and his mother shared something special. Gordie was a completely different person on and off the ice, on the ice he was a rugged, physical force (like his father) who could destroy other players but off the ice he was a nice, caring boy, like his mother. The rest of his childhood talks about him becoming a pro and going to training camps.
When Gordie turns older and makes the Detroit Red Wings team (after bring cut from the New York Rangers camp) He goes on to play 18 great seasons with the Red Wings tying Maurice Richard for the most goals scored ever with 50. He played the most seasons and games at the current time of his retirement, invented the “Gordie Howe” Hat Trick (1 goal, 1 assist, 1 fight) and was rated in the top 5 of the NHL best players. He retired as legend.
If you don’t like hockey this book will probably not be for you but it is still and great book either way.
